Anyone who has been studying the Bible for any length of time
at all has read and is familiar with the story of
David and Bath-sheba.
This study may go much deeper than you have ever been before, Please complete the study.. You will find it to be very interesting with many new points being uncovered..The story compels one who is into the Deeper Studies to do a lot of meditating..
Let's begin..2Sa:11:1: And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel;
and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah.
But David tarried still at Jerusalem.A passing thought here would be.. If all the kings were gone into battle,
why did King David choose to remain behind and send Joab?2Sa:11:2: And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.David rose from his bed... Not from a chair or other place but from his bed.. One would have to wonder what was on his mind that gave him the desire to get out of bed and go upon the roof..
Did David make a practice of going up on the roof.. If so, for what?Could it be that Bath-sheba made it a practice to go upon the roof to bathe?
And could David have been a regular spectator to these actions?What about Bath-sheba? Was she aware that David was watching her?
Maybe getting a little thrill herself from knowing that she had the King's attentionNow here is where we have to go a little deeper into our study...
It is hard for us to imagine times as they were back then compared to today's world!
Today, it is no trouble seeing a partially clad woman, or even a nude woman.
All one has to do is turn on the TV or pick up a magazine..
But back in the days of David, women showed very little of their body..
If a man got a peek at a bare ankle it was quite a treat and a thrill..Imagine, if you will, what a thrill David must had had to be able to view
this beautiful woman with no clothes at all on!!God honed our sexual emotions just the way He wanted them in order to replenish the earth
and complete this earth age..
These emotions are so strong that they cause us problems many times!
Just as they did to David..Here we see that Bath-sheba has David wanting to know more..
2Sa:11:3: And David sent and enquired after the woman.
And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam,
the wife of Uriah the Hittite?And so, we see that David knew that Bath-sheba was a married woman..2Sa:11:4: And David sent messengers, and took her;
and she came in unto him, and he lay with her;
for she was purified from her uncleanness:
and she returned unto her house.We know that David and Bath-sheba had sex..
We know that David had seen her naked and wanted her..
What about Bath-sheba?
She was a married woman, who had a husband off in battle.
Did it bother her that she had cheated on him?
Or did she want David just as he wanted her?Giving Bath-sheba the benefit of the doubt, one can't blame her for going
with the messengers to David.. After all he was the King..
One had to obey the King, so even had she not wanted to go,
it would have not been wise to refuse..Still, one must wonder how long had David been thinking of and yearning for this action..
2Sa:11:5: And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said,
I am with child!We see from this that Bath-sheba had no trouble communicating with David..
It seems they had parted under friendly terms..
This would probably not have been the case had she been raped..Now as we know, David tried to cover up the fact that Bath-sheba had become pregnant by him.. He sent for the husband, Uriah, to come home for a visit.. Thinking that Uriah had been on the battle field and would welcome the chance to have some female pleasure..
But for some reason, this didn't work out as planed and Uriah did not go to his house and visit his wife.. This is cause for even more meditation.. What red-blooded man would not welcome a chance to take a break from battle and lay in the arms of a lovely woman? The only answer we can come up here is that it was not God's will! Remember the son of David and Bath-sheba (Solomon)
would one day be the, ruler of Israel!We know without a doubt that God loved David.. He proved this over and over..
The main time that we are all familiar with is when young David decided to take on the
Philistine giant named Goliath..
All the warriors were afraid of Goliath, but he failed to scare David because
David knew that God was with him!The following statement which was made by David, shows the love and faith that he had in God..
1Sa:17:26: And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?And David showed no fear or hesitation when he made the following statement..1Sa:17:32: And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him;
thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.There was not a trace of fear in David's voice..
That was because he knew that God would be with him!But King Saul wasn't as sure and showed it in the following statement..
1Sa:17:33: And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.Now here was a King talking to David.. Most would have taken his advice
and forgot all about challenging a man of Goliath's magnitude..But David never faltered, explaining how God had been with him in the past..
1Sa:17:34: And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:1Sa:17:35: And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
1Sa:17:36: Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
1Sa:17:37: David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
Now that shows 100 percent faith in our Father.. No room for even a shadow of doubt..As we know God was indeed with David that day and many times after that.. It is plain that God loved David and that David loved, respected and obeyed God..
So what went wrong in the case of Bath-sheba?? We know that David had many wives. It wasn't like he was starved for sex.. No, he made the same mistake that many of us still make today.. He listened to his flesh.. His mind was telling him how much pleasure he could obtain from this beautiful naked woman that he was viewing.. The thoughts completely dominated his train of thought.. He could think of nothing else until he was able to lay with this woman.. And being King, it was no problem for him to bring it to pass..
We know that the communication between God and David was strong.. David knew God's Words and promises almost by heart, yet he didn't heed them this time.. Why?
Because he listened to his flesh and was not thinking or studying the Word of God!!It is so easy to get caught up in that trap and many do each and every day.. That is why we should start each and every day by having a conversation with God!
First of all, we should thank Him for granting us another day and thank Him for all that He does for us each and every day..By doing this, we at least get each day started off on the right track..
So, we know that David failed to ask for God's advice on this matter.. What did God think of the situation? He was not at all pleased.. He took the child that was the product of the affair, even though David prayed and fasted, asking God to spare the child..Even though God loved David He would not overlook this shortcoming..
He sent Nathan to talk with David..2Sa:12:1: And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.2Sa:12:2: The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds:
2Sa:12:3: But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.
2Sa:12:4: And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.
2Sa:12:5: And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die!
Isn't it funny, how bad something can seem when someone else does it,
but not so bad when we do it?2Sa:12:6: And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.2Sa:12:7: And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
2Sa:12:8: And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.
Here God is really showing His disappointment in David.. He told him that he had given him almost everything there was to give and would have given more if David had only asked.. Beloved, we must remember this lesson.. Before we start chasing things on our own, we need to have a talk with our Father and ask His guidance.. If it is good for us, all we have to do is ask and we will get it.. If it is not good for us, God will withhold it to protect us.. The main thing we have to remember is to take His Word for it..
He always knows best!2Sa:12:9: Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.It is obvious that God is not happy!2Sa:12:10: Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.So don't think that God will overlook David's shortcoming..
We must all pay for what we do unless we repent and are forgiven by our Father..2Sa:12:11: Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.Now we see that David will get a taste of what he dished out..
Remember that.. Sooner or later we all reap what we sow..
God has promised that..Jer:12:13: They have sown wheat, but shall reap thorns: they have put themselves to pain, but shall not profit: and they shall be ashamed of your revenues because of the fierce anger of the LORD.But there is always hope if we obey our father..Ho:10:12: Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.So in closing, stay in God's Word each and every day.. Talk with Him on a regular basis daily.. He loves it when we turn to Him.. Let's all try to make Him happy.. Just think for a minute, all the things that He has done for us..
