MAINE TOWNSHIP, GRUNDY COUNTY — The fridge is radioactive.
HazMat operations were underway Friday afternoon once a farmer reported finding a refrigerator emitting low levels of radiation to emergency services.
Coal City Deputy Fire Chief Greg DeGroot said the farmer was harvesting his field near the bridge on Carbon Hill Road when he took a closer look at the appliance that has been there for approximately two weeks.
“Dumped in the creek is a small refrigerator that would be found in a college dorm or laboratory,” DeGroot said. Yellow tape bearing radiation warnings criss-crosses the fridge. Around 2:30 p.m. Friday, the farmer called and Grundy County Emergency Management agents and Coal City firefighters arrived within minutes. With the wind blowing to the south and east, they came down Jugtown Road to reach the farm on Spring Road and parked about 200 feet from the bridge.
