I have one of those mini refrigerators with a tiny freezer. I moved it in my car and it stayed on it's side for about 7 hours. When it got to its destination, we let it sit upright until the next day (~12 hours).
Just the way it was laying wouldn't cause this to happen. It sounds to me like a refrigerant line or the coil got punctured and the refrigerant leaked out, and that would mean its time to toss it and get a new one and be more careful with it if you move it around.

FUKUSHIMA--Naka Shiga has relaunched her fish-selling business from the temporary housing unit she now occupies in Fukushima, to lift her own spirits as well as those of others forced by the nuclear crisis to evacuate their homes.
Shiga, 72, receives frequent visitors in her small apartment, one of about 200 in a complex in the Minami-Yanome district of Fukushima, about four kilometers from the city center.
When a prospective customer dropped in recently, Shiga smiled and offered them a seat at the kotatsu, a low table with an electric heater underneath and a blanket on top.
Shiga displayed her goods, such as packages of salmon and salted squid, but talk of business was soon set aside. They spoke instead about the troubles facing various acquaintances. "Yes, yes. That's right," Shiga said as she listened, her encouraging words helping her guest feel at ease with the conversation.
Shiga and the people who visit her unit are all evacuees from within or around the Ukedo district of Namiemachi, about seven kilometers north of Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
