TV chef Mary Ann Esposito delights with new family-style cookbook
Family dinners are a fine concept, but how can they fit in with today’s hectic lifestyles? The Buffalo, N.Y.-raised cook and current contributor to the Herald’s Fork Lift food blog said panicked chefs should follow the Boy Scouts’ motto: Be prepared.
“Be prepared and think ahead. It’s tough to teach an old dog new tricks. If you are the type of person who doesn’t think about dinner until 5 p.m., it’s frustrating because you are tired when you get home,” Esposito said. “Have a staple pantry so you can create a meal for dinner.”
That means: olive oil, pastas, beans (dried or canned), fresh garlic, capers, sardines and tomato paste. Her advice: Put money into quality staples like olive oil and cheese.
“In your refrigerator, have good cheese. Spend (money) on parmigiano-reggiano. Become knowledgeable about real Italian ingredients,” she said.
Living at USC: Birnkrant, Century, Cardinal Gardens
Out of all of the living situations I’ve had so far, Birnkrant’s Freshmen Dorm-style living has been the most satisfying to me – by far. Even now, in my junior year, I still hang out with the people from my Freshman year who I met in Birnkrant, and many of the people who lived on my floor that year do many interesting things on campus.
==========================================================================================
My sophomore year, I lived in Century Apartments with three other engineering students. Even though it took me about two more minutes to get to class when compared to Birnkrant (where I was able to roll out of bed at 7:55am for my 8:00am class on time), it was still very close to campus. There is definitely a difference between the dormitory-style living found in Birnkrant, and the apartment-style living in Century. Apartment living is generally much more quiet – it’s difficult to get to know your neighbors, and I did not bond with people on my floor as much as I did in Birnkrant. But apartments have their perks – for the first time, I had my own kitchen, in which I could cook meals any time of the day, as well as a living room where I could study at any hours of the night without bothering my roommates. Century also has a swimming pool area where I often met up with friends to study in the sun or in the water. Check out Steve Wolfsohn’s blog to see more about Century life – he’s living there this year!...
Eat Well, Spend Less: Homemade Substitutes for Grocery Staples
As anyone else noticed the rapidly rising price of food lately? That the usual grocery run is costing more and more? I have, and I’ve been comparing receipts with several other food bloggers. The results of our research has prompted us to bring you a series to help you spend less while continuing to eat well.
Spearheaded by Jessica of Life as MOM , our series Eat Well, Spend Less is the goal of this series.
Robyn O’Brian has a fantastic TED talk where she partly highlights the need for us to reject processed foods and embrace the “real food” movement for the health of our children. It’s powerful stuff. If you haven’t watched the clip, I definitely recommend making it a priority. ( My latest multi-tasking duo is folding laundry and listening to TED talks on YouTube This is great stuff. Would you consider making it into an e-book? If you and Katie put your two posts together with the recipes and made them into an e-book, it would be amazing. I’d buy it in a heartbeat. It would be awesome to have all of the recipes together, in one spot, so that I could print them and put the whole thing in a binder. It *is* a lot of work to cook everything from scratch, but it would really streamline the process if all of the resources were at my fingertips.
