Phil Miller wanted to find out how much that second refrigerator he keeps in the garage costs him in electricity.
So he borrowed a kilowatt meter from the Holland Board of Public Works and found out that second fridge — which holds pop, beer and other drinks, oats, baking mix, corn meal, flour and popcorn — was about $10 of his monthly BPW electric bill, or about $120 a year.
“By eliminating that second refrigerator, we’d be bringing our cost down 10 percent,” Miller said.
It would be better to plug in the second refrigerator only for parties, said Andree Keneau, BPW communications specialist.
Once described as “better at turning a light on than turning it off,” Miller said he has made a concerted effort to become more energy conscious since becoming a member of the BPW Board of Directors in July 2010.
“I was amazed by how much energy I was wasting,” he said. He calls his new role “a challenging and fascinating experience.

Hey there Suzie S! I’m Blake from Home Depot’s online community. Stephen is right; these units use very little energy in the grand scheme of things. However, if you would like to figure out how much energy a specific unit would use you can refer to the yellow EnergyGuide tag that must be present on all appliances sold in the US. On the energy guide tag you will see a line that says “This Model uses: 345 kWh/Year” (for example).
Now all you have to do is take that number, and multiply it by the energy rate you are charged by your utility company (noted on your electric bill). So for our example 345 x $0.11 (per kWH) = $37.95 (cost per year estimated). Divide that number by 12 months $37.95 / 12 = $3.16 per month.
Using the energy guide labels you can compare the efficiency of different models while you are shopping! I hope this helps Suzie S!
