Customer Reviews:
  1. Emotional
I wasn't sure I was going to like the note style of writing but it was actually very easy to read. Because you can read the book in 20 minutes it almost doesn't feel like a 'proper' book. However it has both a story and characters who I found engaging. It gives an insight into a relationship...
  2. Interesting concept, but falls short
As most of the other reviewers have stated, this is an extremely fast read. I didn't find the characters particularly compelling, in spite of the tragic circumstances of the novel; Kulper's unconventional (but interesting) method of letting the story unfold solely through notes left on a...

Life on the Refrigerator Door
Life on the Refrigerator Door

"Mom, " "I went to the store. See inside the fridge. I watered the plants. I cleaned out Peter's cage. I tidied the sitting room. And the kitchen. And I did the washing up. " "I'm going to bed. " "Your live-in servant, " "Claire " 'Life on the Refrigerator Door' is told exclusively through notes exchanged by Claire and her mother, Elizabeth, during the course of a life-altering year. Their story builds to an emotional crescendo when Elizabeth is diagnosed with breast cancer. Stunningly sad but ultimately uplifting, this is a clever, moving, and original portrait of the relationship between a daughter and mother. It is about how we live our lives constantly rushing, and never making time for those we love. It is also an elegy to how much can be said in so few words, if only we made the time to say them.

Steffikins: Life on the Refrigerator Door - Alice Kuipers

Claire and her mom share the same house but they live on different planets...While Claire’s world revolves around school, shopping and her new boyfriend, Mom is always busy with work, work and more work. But they do have one thing in common: the kitchen fridge. It’s where they leave little notes for each other. It’s how they keep in touch. Then one day Claire comes home to a note that’s different from all the others. The premise of this book really intrigued me, the idea of constantly leaving notes for each other first made me think it was very sweet and a cute way to communicate between two people who keep missing each other. However...as the book went on I found it annoying! I was irritated with the mum for not managing to grab Claire for even 10 minutes to say to her in person what should never be said on a post it note....

Shut the Refrigerator Door Already. ~ Ellen Smoak | elephant journal

Stop holding the door of life open, decide what you want, and make it happen.

Do you ever hold the refrigerator door open for way too long, waiting for something to just appear out of nowhere? And what about the times you keep going back, as if exactly what you want to eat will magically be there five minutes later?

I can still hear my mother hollerin’, as us fine southern ladies do: “Stop holdin’ the door open, yer letting the cold air out. You know what’s there. You better figure out what the heck you want before opening that door again.”

Yesterday I was walking aimlessly through the mall. You know what I mean: the type of aimless walking you do when you know you should be doing something more constructive with your time, but you have no idea exactly what. Well, that’s what I was doing. And I’d been doing it for about two hours.
